Jakarta Forum - Tokyo, Bullets and death threats arrived by mail on Thursday at the offices of Japan`s Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and the secretary-general of his centre-left party, police said.
The bullet sent to the premier`s office was detected by security staff using an X-ray device.
"They gave the unopened envelope to police, who confirmed later that it was indeed a bullet," a prime minister`s office spokesman said, quoting Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yorihisa Matsuno.
The office of Ichiro Ozawa, the powerful secretary-general of Hatoyama`s Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), received an envelope containing what was believed to be a rifle bullet, said a Tokyo police spokesman.
A note to Hatoyama read "Die", while a card addressed to the party chief said, "The target is Ozawa," officials said.
It was not known who was responsible or what the motivation was.
In similar threats since the Hatoyama government took power last September, bullets have previously been sent to Ozawa`s office and residence, the DPJ headquarters and major broadcaster TV Asahi.
Approval ratings for the Hatoyama government, which ended a half-century of conservative rule, have plummeted as both the premier and Ozawa have become embroiled in political funds scandals.
