Century Scandal: Century Bank customer Budi Sampoerna
Jakarta Forum - Surabaya, Former Century Bank customer Budi Sampoerna said here on Friday that he had been decieved by one of the bank`s owners Robert Tantular.
He made the statement after he was grilled by House committee members investigating the controversial case of Bank Century bailout in 2008.
"I am a victim but I am now more peaceful (after the committee`s examination). I am now relieved," he said.
His lawyer, Eman Achmad, confirmed it saying "Pak (Mr) Budi has so far been given a very negative impression and now he has explained it all."
He said he had submitted a number of documents "to make his case clearer."
Committee deputy chairman Yahya Sacawirya said that all stories about Budi Sampoerno spreading so far were not true.
"What happened was that Robert Tantular has deceived Budi Sampoerna as if he was involved in a lending and borrowing deal which was not true," he said.
Flanked by other committee members Achsanul Qosasih, Kamarduddin Syam, Andi Rahmad and Agus Sulistyo he said the disbursement of US$18 million as Robert Tantular had said was not true.
"Pak Budi Sampoerna has never known about the deal. It was non-existent. His money totalled US$96.5 million and was put under his name and he was even surprised if it had dropped by US$18 million," he said.
He said Budi Sampoerna had even said that the US$116 million in Antaboga was non-existent. "Robert Tantular had arranged as if Budi Sampoerna was the investor," he said.
The committee was here to investigate the flow of former Century Bank funds.
Robert Tantular has been convicted and jailed for five years in prison.
