Trigana Air ATR-42 Models: emergency landing in marshy land
"It was an accident, but not an ordinary one, especially because both of its engines had stopped. We are still awaiting a final result of an investigation," Air Transportation Director General of the Ministry of Transportation Herry Bhakti S Gumay said in Jakarta Friday.
He said the incident was rather strange, because at first its left engine died down, later followed by the right one, which forced the pilot to make an emergency landing in marshy land.
"Actually, even with one engine only the plane could reach Samarinda, as it was also built to be able to fly with one engine only. But the runway in Balikpapan was too small for the aircraft," he said.
But latest information had it that when the plane was about to fly to Balikpapan, both its engines were dead, and the pilot had no choice but making an emergency landing.
Herry also said that an investigation team of the Transportation Safety National Committee and the Air Transportation Directorate General are conducting an investigation of the case.
"An ATR 42 team had also come there to find out how come that both engines of the plane died down while the aircraft was in a perfect condition," he said.
The plane had a crew of five and 51 passengers under the command of Captain Nur Solichin flying the Kalimarau-Termindung route, Samarinda. All the passengers were unhurt, and the aircraft had 74 kg of cargo and 451 suitcases.
