Jakarta Forum - Sukabumi, Two researchers from different institutions in Japan are conducting a comparative study to the "Mekar Tani" farmers group in Sukabumi district on Monday.
The farmers group has been developing an intensified organic rice planting system in their farming in Kebon Pedes, Jambe Nenggang village, Kebon Pedes subdistrict, Sukabumi district, West Java.
The two researchers SVRK Prabhakar, policy researcher, climate policy project, of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), and Daisuke SANO, expert (agriculture sector) Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Change Advisory and Monitoring Mission in Indonesia.
The arrival of the two researchers in Indonesia followed the result of research by Prof Dr Iswandi Anas, soil biology professor, Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) on raising the national rice production and reduction of methane emissions from rice fields by way of organic technology.
SVRK Prabhakar told the media he came to Sukabumi to have a close look at the famrers using the organic SRI method in the rice fields because research, the application of the SRI system can reduce methane (CH4) emissions, also responsible for global warming.
"I also wish to know the benefits for the farmers in applying the organic SRI system," the Indian born researcher said.
The outcome of the study in Sukabumi, he said, will be developed in the Philippines and India.
In the meantime, soil biology professor of IPB Prof. Dr. Iswandi Anas said the application of the SRI system can boost rice production nationally, and benefit the growers.
