WILD ELEPHANTS TRAMPLE HUTS IN VILLAGES

Jakarta Forum - Tapaktuan, S Aceh, Jan 31. A herd of three wild Sumatran elephants (Elephas maximus sumatranus) damaged tens of peasant huts at Simpang village, Bakongan sub-district, South Aceh District.

Besides trampling on dozens of the huts, the endangered giant animals that entered the villages in the past couple of weeks also damaged crops such as bananas, palms and areca nuts.

Simpang village head Hamdan said that the loss caused by the elephants was estimated at tens of millions.

"Apart from the wooden huts, the big animals also destroyed four hectares public palm plantations," Hamdan said.

The villagers are afraid to go outdoors at night, and only a few brave men tried to drive the elephants away, he said.

Efforts by the traditional and normal way of chasing them away like using firework had not been very successful, and even caused the big animals angrier.

Meanwhile, East Trumon village head H Lahmuddin said that the villagers in Naca, Jambo Dalem, Kapa Sesak and several other villages began to worry about a similar elephant attack.

"Usually after destroying a plantation in Simpang village, East Bakongan, the elephants moved to the East Trumon district," said Lahmuddin.

Both Simpang villagers and sub-district head expect the relevant agencies and institutions to cope with animal attack.

"It`s been almost ten years of our regions had been disturbed by the wild animals, and nobody seem to care. We hope the government will set up a wild management post so that people can do their normal daily activities," said he added.

QUAKE IN CHINA`S SICHUAN KILLS ONE, DAMAGES HOMES

Jakarta Forum - Beijing, 31/1. An earthquake that struck villages in China`s Sichuan Province on Sunday killed one person, injured 15 and damaged thousands of homes, the Xinhua news agency reported.

More than 100 houses collapsed in the quake, which had an epicenter about midway between Chongqing and Chengdu.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the earthquake as having a magnitude of 5.2.

The casualties were reported in three villages of Moxi town, near Suining City in eastern Sichuan, according to the Sichuan Provincial Earthquake Administration.

Tongnan County, neighboring Suining, reported that 4,700 homes were damaged, with economic losses of at least 30 million yuan (about $4.5 million), Xinhua said.

Chongqing`s civil affairs authority sent 40 tents and 1,500 cotton-padded quilts to the disaster area, it said.

The area east of Suining, a city of 3.8 million people, is not prone to earthquakes and has recorded only three minor temblors measuring 2.0 in the past 20 years, Xinhua reported, citing officials.

The area is about 150 km (95 miles) east of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, and over 200 km southeast of the region that was struck by an 8.0-magnitude earthquake on May 12, 2008, which left about 87,000 people dead or missing.

TERRY ENDS TROUBLED DAY WITH CHELSEA WINNER

Jakarta Forum - London, Jan 31. Chelsea captain John Terry put the controversy over his private life to one side by scoring the winner in a 2-1 victory at Burnley as his side went four points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Terry, whose position as England captain was called into question after newspapers published details of his alleged affair with the ex-girlfriend of former Blues team-mate Wayne Bridge, scored eight minutes from time on Saturday when he headed in a corner for only his second goal this season.

"It was a very difficult game," Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti told ESPN Turning to Terry, who did not celebrate his goal, the Italian added: "He`s a fantastic player. Every game, he plays very well.

"He`s an important player for us. All of Chelsea support him."

Nicolas Anelka had given Chelsea a 27th-minute lead at Turf Moor when the France striker turned in Florent Malouda`s cross while, seven minutes later, Terry was booked for a clumsy challenge on Robbie Blake.

Relegation candidates Burnley levelled in the 50th minute when a ball over the top of Alex found Steven Fletcher who beat the defender before shooting past Petr Cech.

Chelsea`s victory means they will still be top of the table regardless of the result of Sunday`s clash between title rivals Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium.

Earlier, Tottenham stayed fourth with a 1-1 draw at Birmingham.

But Spurs` rivals for a place in next season`s Champions League, Liverpool and Aston Villa, both won to keep up the pressure.

Liverpool beat Bolton 2-0 to stay a point adrift of Spurs with Villa, who have a game in hand, two points behind after defeating Fulham by the same scoreline in a match where Gabriel Agbonlahor scored both goals.

At the other end of the table, second from bottom Hull failed to climb out of the relegation zone after a 2-2 draw with Wolves.

Everton made it four league wins from five with a 1-0 victory away to Wigan while Blackburn Rovers and West Ham shared the points in a goalless draw.

Spurs` Jermain Defoe broke the deadlock at St Andrews when, after a Peter Crouch knockdown, he blasted the ball past Joe Hart with 21 minutes left.

But Birmingham rescued a point through Liam Ridgewell`s 90th minute equaliser.

At Anfield, Dirk Kuyt put Liverpool ahead eight minutes before half-time.

Liverpool went 2-0 up when Emiliano Insua`s 25-yard shot took a huge deflection off Bolton`s Kevin Davies for a 70th minute own-goal.

"I am pleased with the result and the second half but not too happy with the first half - but at the end of the day we needed to win and we won," said Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

Agbonlahor put Villa in front five minutes before half-time at Craven Cottage when he headed a Stiliyan Petrov cross past Fulham`s Australia goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

And there was still time for Agbonlahor to make it 2-0 ahead of the interval when, in the 44th minute, he curled a shot past Schwarzer from 15 yards.

At the KC Stadium, former Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink fired Hull into an 11th minute lead with a 20-yard shot.

But Wolves were level four minutes after half-time after a comical own-goal where Hull`s Anthony Gardner sliced an unthreatening Ronald Zubar cross over the head of goalkeepeer Boaz Myhill.

However, minutes later Hull were back in front when Stephen Hunt scored from the penalty spot after Zubar jumped into Jozy Altidore only for Matthew Jarvis to draw Wolves level in the 67th minute.

Tim Cahill was once again Everton`s star as the Australia midfielder headed in his sixth goal of the season six minutes from time away to Wigan.

Sunday`s other top-flight match sees Manchester City looking to bounce back from their League Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United at home to bottom-of-the-table Portsmouth.

Sunderland and Stoke meet on Monday.

PAY UP IN THE AMBULANCE, SAY AUSTRIAN EMERGENCY SERVICES

Jakarta Forum- Vienna, Jan. 31. On a ski holiday to Austria, remember to bring your boots, your hat and -- on the off-chance you might break a leg -- your bank card.

A German tourist who injured himself while skiing in the Tyrolean Alps this month said he was asked to swipe his bank card before he could be treated, local radio ORF reported Friday.

"During the ambulance ride, the crew started pushing buttons and then they said: `Sorry but we have to charge you 230 euros (320 dollars) now,`" said the 45-year-old holidaymaker from Berlin.

"They were obviously very embarrassed."

Austrian emergency services defended the measure, saying it was often difficult to track down payment from foreign tourists once they had returned home.

Now most ambulances are equipped with a machine to take card payments on the spot, they said.

NAT`L 2010 RICE PRODUCTION TARGET SET AT 66 MILLION TONS

Jakarta Forum - Mataram, Jan 30. Agriculture Minister Suswono said the government`s rice production target for 2010 had been set at 66 million tons.

"This means national rice production is expected to rise by 3.2 percent from 63 million tons in 2009," he said here on Saturday.

To reach the target rice field potentials would be optimized despite technical constraints that had always hindered the effort such as limited water supply caused by illegal logging activities and conversion of agricultural land into industrial areas.

"Serious efforts must be made so that agricultural land will not deplete due to industrial development," he said.

Suswono said the government had issued Law Number 41 of 2009 for the protection of agricultural land.

The law states that agricultural land must be preserved to ensure food resilience in the future.

"A government regulation on the law`s implementation will soon be issued to ensure prompt compliance," he said.

He said regional governments must support the national program of increasing rice fields to ensure the success of the national food self-sufficiency program by 2014.

SINGLE WINDOW SYSTEM IN PLACE AT FIVE RI ENTRY GATES

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan 29, Four seaports and one airport in Indonesia, namely the seaports of Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Emas , Tanjung Perak , Belawan and Soekarno-Hatta airport, are using an electronic-based National Single Window (NSW) system to serve import activities, an official said.

Chairwoman of the National Preparatory Team in charge of developing an electronic-based national single window (NSW) system, Sri Mulnyani Indrawati, said here on Friday the use of the system was expected to smooth the flow of exports and imports as well as trade services.

Mulyani who is also finance minister made the remarks on the occasion of the commissioning by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of the system at a pier of PT Jakarta International Container Terminal at Tanjung Priok port here.

"The inauguration marks the application of the NSW mandatory import system for all importers` goods coming in the country through the seaports of Tanjung Periok, Tanjung Perak, Tanjung Emas, Belawan and Soekarno-Hatta airport," she said.

She said that the team she chaired was set up in 2006 and was in charge of developing an NSW system in Indonesia as part of the ASEAN single window, which is an electronic-based system for customs documents processing.

"The team has been successful in developing a blue print, a trial at the end of December 2006. It was developed with two pillars, namely trade system and port system, not only for ASEAN but also for all countries," she said.

Sri Mulyani explained that since 2006 and up to 2009, the team had conducted a series of trial-tests and limited implementation of the system which was inaugurated by the president on Friday.

"Beginning today, the application of the NSW system is equipped with an official website which can be accessed through cellular phones. In the days ahead, we hope that it can be operated at all international ports and airports," she said.

The national single window export and import service is an integrated public service which provides application, exchange and processing of information electronically.

The system will provide services in the process and flow of all exported and imported goods in an effort to increase the competitiveness of the national economy.

The system makes it possible for data and information to be submitted at once, synchronizes data and information processing and integrates the flow of business processes involving customs, licensing, export-import, port, payment, shipping and logistical systems as well as other systems connected with export-import handling.

Mulyani said that up to 2014 the system would be expanded to include a method that would enable officers not to check all export and import goods but only those suspected of being in violation of existing rules.

During their stay in Indonesia, the delegation is expected to meet with high level officials from relevant ministries and authorities, economists, the European Union delegation, as well as with representatives of the Indonesian and Swedish related business community.

MERPATI OPENS KOTABARU-BANJARMASIN FLIGHTS

Jakarta Forum - Kotabaru, Jan 29, Merpati Airlines will soon cover the Kotabaru-Banjarmasin route with basis at H Gusti Syamsir Alam airport, Kotabaru, South Kalimantan.

Head of the Kotabaru transportation agency Faturrahman said here Thursday that there are three days in each week during which there is no flights at Stagen airport, because Trigana Airlines flies over the Banjarmasin-Kotabaru and Balikpapan-Berau routes only on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

And in the vacant days on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays flights will be conducted by Merpati Airlines also using ATR-42s as operated by Trigana Airlines.

"We hope under such circumstances there will be a competition in service and price, and it is up to the public which is the best for them," he said.

In his recommendation, Fatur has asked the company which will operate Merpati Airlines to fly from Kotabaru to Banjaramsin at 8 am local time, while from Banjarmasin to KOtabaru later at 4 pm, and the rest is up to the airline company in question.

"If the airline company approves of the recommendation, God willing it will have many passengers, because the period of the flights suit office hours," he said.

Touching on the company`s wish for facilities from the Kotabaru regency administration, he cannot make any promises, as it first has to be consulted with the regional administration.

"The facilities included parking lots, overnight accommodation for the pilots and crew members, and guaranteed security," he said.

R&B SINGER ETTA JAMES HOSPITALIZED WITH INFECTION

Jakarta Forum - Los Angeles, Jan 30, Grammy-winning R&B singer Etta James has been hospitalized for about a week near her Southern California home for treatment of various ailments, including a bloodstream infection, her son said on Friday.

The 72-year-old recording star, best known for her bluesy hit ballad "At Last," grew ill after entering a detoxification center a month ago for treatment of an addiction to painkillers and over-the-counter medicine, Donto James told Reuters.

As her condition worsened, she was moved to a nursing facility, and then to Riverside Community Hospital, near her home east of Los Angeles, he said.

"She`s been in a pretty big battle," said Donto James, her eldest son.

The performer is being treated for a number of ailments, including sepsis, a potentially fatal infection spread through the bloodstream, which in her case is believed to have started from a urinary tract infection, her son said.

He said that illness may have been a recurrence of an infection that she had around the time she performed "At Last" on the ABC show "Dancing with the Stars" last April.

Donto James, who played in his mother`s backing band and is CEO of an addiction-recovery home in Riverside, said his mother also is suffering from speech difficulties, the cause of which he said had yet to be pinpointed.

He believes that lingering illness may have contributed to her public outburst last year over Beyonce`s performance of "At Last" at an inaugural ball for President Barack Obama. James expressed anger that someone else sang her signature song for the president.

Her son said doctors at the Riverside hospital are planning to discharge James "very soon" and transfer her to a skilled nursing facility for follow-up care. He is not sure she is well enough to be released.

With songs like "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin` Daddy," the three-time Grammy winner was a key figure in the early days of rock `n` roll. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, though she diversified throughout her long career into mainstream blues, soul and R&B.

James had numerous ups-and-downs in her career and personal life, struggling with obesity and heroin addiction. In 2003 she underwent gastric bypass surgery and lost more than 200 pounds.

VIETNAM WRITER JAILED FOR FOUR YEARS FOR `PROPAGANDA`:COURTi

Jakarta Forum - HANOI, Jan 29, 2010, A Vietnamese court jailed a writer Friday for four years for "propaganda against the state", a court official said, in the latest in a series of cases against democracy activists in the communist state.

Pham Thanh Nghien was also ordered to spend three years under house arrest after serving her prison time, said the official, who declined to be named. Nghien, 32, was convicted and sentenced after a trial lasting less than a day in the northern port city of Haiphong.

Rights activists have said the charge under Penal Code Article 88 criminalises peaceful dissent. Before the trial her lawyer, Tran Vu Hai, said Nghien was accused in connection with a request she made to authorities in 2008 for a demonstration against inflation. She was further accused of staging a sit-in at her house with a banner to protest Vietnam`s handling of maritime relations with China, and of posting a picture of her protest on the Internet, he said.

Foreign journalists and diplomats were not permitted to attend the trial. The United States-based Human Rights Watch last year named Nghien as one of 37 writers from 19 countries to receive its Hellman/Hammett award for writers who have been targets of political persecution. Nghien was arrested in late 2008, about the same time as nine other dissidents also charged with propaganda against the state.

Appeals courts recently upheld jail terms against all nine. Last week a court in Ho Chi Minh City jailed four democracy activists between five and 16 years for trying to overthrow the regime, in a case which the European Union delegation to Vietnam called "a major and regrettable step backwards".

The US and Britain also voiced concern. Human Rights Watch said their case highlighted a climate of increasingly harsh political repression in the country. Another democracy activist, Nguyen Ba Dang, 44, was arrested in Hai Duong province and his computer seized last week, his wife said.

FRANCE MOVES TOWARDS FULL ISLAMIC VEIL BAN

Jakarta Forum - Paris, Jan 30, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon on Friday asked France`s top court to help the government draft a law banning the full Islamic veil, his office said.

The government`s move comes three days after a French parliament report called for a ban on the burqa and niqab, saying Muslim women who fully cover their heads and faces pose an "unacceptable" challenge to French values.

Fillon wrote to the State Council, the country`s highest administrative court, asking it to "study the legal solutions enabling us to reach a ban on wearing the full veil, which I want to be as wide and effective as possible."

He asked the court to "help the government find a legal answer to the concerns expressed by parliament`s representatives and to rapidly submit a bill on the subject to parliament."

The State Council is to submit its findings by the end of March.

After six months of hearings, a panel of 32 lawmakers this week recommended a ban on the face-covering veil in schools, hospitals, public transport and government offices, the broadest move yet to restrict Muslim dress in France.

The commission stopped short however of calling for legislation to outlaw the burqa in the streets, shopping centres or other public venues after raising doubts about the constitutionality of such a move.

France is home to Europe`s biggest Muslim minority but the sight of fully-veiled women remains rare. Only 1,900 women wear a niqab, 90 percent of them under 40, according to interior ministry estimates.

Supporters of a ban argue that the full veil is being pushed by radicals in the French Muslim community, but critics say the wearing of the garment remains marginal and warn a ban risks stigmatising France`s six million Muslims.

In 2004, France passed a law banning headscarves and any other "conspicuous" religious symbols in state schools after a long-running debate on how far it was willing to go to accommodate Islam in its strictly secular society.

The new French debate on the face-veil is being closely watched, three months after Swiss voters approved a ban on minarets.

President Nicolas Sarkozy set the tone in June when he declared the burqa "not welcome" in France.

He has since sought to reassure France`s Muslims, declaring this week that freedom to practise religion was enshrined in the French constitution.

French support for a law banning the full veil is strong: a poll last week showed 57 percent are in favour.

The leader of Sarkozy`s right-wing party in parliament, Jean-Francois Cope, has already presented draft legislation that would make it illegal for anyone to cover their faces in public on security grounds.

The Netherlands and Austria are considering a ban on the full veil, while Denmark said Thursday it would limit the use in public of the burka and niqab veils although stopping short of an outright ban.

RUPIAH WEAKENS 40 POINTS AGAINST US DOLLAR

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan. 29, The rupiah weakened 40 points against the US dollar in the Jakarta interbank spot market here on Friday morning on profit taking moves.

The Indonesian currency traded at Rp9,360-Rp9,370 per US dollar, down 40 points from the figure at at the market`s close a day earlier.

Market activities were dominated by sell-offs as investors wanted to take profit after the local currency had rallied earlier, Rully Nova, a foreign exchange analyst of PT Bank Himpunan Saudara Tbk, said.

"We predict that the rupiah will continue to depreciate until its position will reach nearly Rp9,400 per US dollar," he said.

He, however, was optimistic that the rupiah would still have a chance to move upward as foreign investors were still positive toward the domestic money market.

Both the ASEAN Secretariat and the World Bank agreed on the importance of sustaining the discussion on strategic issues and of enhancing their information exchange and coordination.

The Consultation Session was followed by a half-day development seminar on "The Post-Crisis World: Global and East Asian Regional Development Scenarios" held at the ASEAN Secretariat on Friday.

Th seminar was being participated in by representatives from the ASEAN Member States and key officers from the ASEAN Secretariat and the World Bank.

WELSH SUPERMARKET BANS SHOPPING IN PYJAMAS

Jakarta Forum - London, Jan. 29, Shoppers in pyjamas and bare feet are no longer welcome at a supermarket in Wales where customer complaints have prompted the introduction of a strict dress code.

Signs announcing the no-PJs rule now grace the entrance to the sprawling Tesco`s outlet in St Mellons, a suburb of the Welsh capital Cardiff, that is open most nights until 10:00 p.m.

"To avoid causing offence or embarrassment to others, we ask that our customers are appropriately dressed when visiting our store (footwear must be worn at all times and no nightwear is permitted)," they read.

Only a handful of customers have ever turned up in pyjamas, but a spokeswoman for Tesco`s -- the biggest retailer in Britain -- said it was enough to trigger firm measures.

"We`re not a nightclub with a strict dress code, and jeans and trainers (sneakers) are of course more than welcome," she said.

"We do, however, request that customers do not shop in their PJs or nightgowns ... We have listened to customer feedback that it makes them uncomfortable and embarrassed."

Plant flavanoid may help prevent leukaemia

Jakarta Forum - London, Jan. 29. Eating foods like celery and parsley which contain the naturally occurring flavanoid apigenin may help prevent leukemia, Dutch scientists said Thursday.

Maikel Peppelenbosch of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands said tests showed that apigenin -- a common component of fruit and vegetables -- was able to halt the development of two kinds of cells in leukemia and cut their survival chances.

The findings suggest apigenin could hold promise for preventing leukemia, Peppelenbosch said.

But he warned that his study had also found the compound has chemotherapy resistance properties, suggesting it might interfere with standard treatments for people already diagnosed with leukemia.

"Apigenin might be a useful preventative agent for leukemia, but it should not be taken at the same time as chemotherapy for established disease as it could interfere with the positive effects of treatment," Peppelenbosch wrote in a study in the Cell Death and Disease scientific journal.

Flavanoids are compounds with antioxidant properties that protect cells against damage by oxygen molecules.

Previous studies have shown that apigenin, which is found in celery, parsley, red wine, tomato sauce and other plant-based foods, may also be beneficial in protecting against ovarian cancer.

Jakarta Forum - Rome, 27 Jan. An international team of archaeologists claims to have unearthed the 2000-year-old birthplace of the Roman emperor, Vespasian, north of the Italian capital.

Vespasian ruled the Roman empire in the first century A.D. and was behind the construction of the Colosseum, one of Italy`s most popular landmarks.

Archeologists believe they have located his birthplace in the Falacrinae valley near the hill town of Cittareale, 130 km northeast of Rome.

"Ancient Roman historian Suetonius says Vespasian was born in the Falacrinae valley area. Field surveys and information from locals have told us tell us this must be Vespasian`s birthplace," one of the project`s directors, British archaeologist Helen Patterson told Adnkronos International (AKI).

Vespasian was the ninth Roman emperor, who reigned from 69-79 AD. He was believed to come from humble beginnings and founded the short-lived Flavian dynasty after the civil wars that followed Nero`s death in 68 AD.

During recent excavations, the archaeologists uncovered sumptuous marble floors and mosaics at the site of the 3,000-4,000 square metre Villa of Falacrinae, Patterson said.

The team of 30-60 archaeologists recovered pots, numerous coins, ceramic and metal artefacts from the site which is 820 metres above sea level, overlooking the surrounding Falacrinae valley.

The archeologists are hoping to recover more items in fresh excavations in July and August, Patterson said.

Archaelogists from the British School at Rome and the University of Perugia used geophysical surveys to give them an X-ray image of the buried building, Patterson explained.

"It was obviously a very, very big structure and very luxurious," she said adding that the marble used in the villa`s floors had been imported from all over the Mediterranean.

"We have also discovered Roman baths, a garden and a dining room and have only excavated a portion of the villa since the dig began in 2007," she said.

The villa lies on a major Roman road, Via Salaria, which connects the capital, Rome, to the northeastern Italian Adriatic coast and that was once used to transport salt.

Italian archaeologist Filippo Coarelli, a retired archaeology professor at Perugia University is the project`s co-director.

He told AKI excavations began in the Falacrinae area after a farmer found a block of marble with a Latin inscription on it dedicated to a local chieftain.

The local official is believed to have played a role in the Roman victory over the Italic peoples during the 91-88 BC wars between the Roman Republic and other Italian cities.

Excavations conducted in 2005 uncovered an ancient Christian cemetery and former necropolis at Pallotini, near Cittareale.

Vespasian was the son of Flavius Sabinus, a Roman knight, tax collector and banker. His mother, Vespasia Polla, also belonged to the equestrian order in society but had a brother who entered the Senate.

Little is known about his reign but the former soldier is best known for his fiscal reforms and the consolidation of the empire which generated political stability and a vast Roman building programme including the Colosseum.

"These digs are important for our understanding of ancient Roman history and of the Flavian dynasty," Coarelli said.

"He was a man from the provinces, a self-made man from a bourgeois not an aristocratic family.

"To find the place where Vespasian was born and lived can help us understand his career and the Roman occupation of Italy," Coarelli concluded.

BKPM-GARUDA COOPERATION IN INVESTMENT PROMOTION

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan 28, The Investment coordinating agency (BKPM) and national flag-carrier PT Garuda Indonesia will be working together in promoting investment in the country and at the same time enhancing Indonesia`s image locally and overseas.

The relevant memorandum of understanding (MoU) had been signed by BKPM chief Gita Wirjawan and Garuda president director Emirsyah Satar at the BKPM office in Jakarta Wednesday night.

Gita said the cooperation covers a joint promotion in the form of the placement of BKPM brochures of Indonesian investment data and information on every Garuda flight.

This cooperation, he said, also concurrently takes place with the opening of Garuda flights to Europe soon.

He said Garuda will at least have 24 overseas flights, and 100 domestic ones.

EXXON READY TO PRODUCE 25,000 BPD FROM CEPU

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan 27, Mobil Cepu Ltd. (MCL), the subsidiary of ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia, is ready to produce 25,000 barrels of oil per day from its field in Banyuurip in Cepu Block, East Java, spokesman said.

ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia Vice President for Public Relatios and General Affairs Maman Budiman said in a meeting with House Commission VII here on Wednesday that the production rate was determined upon its buyers.

"We are ready to produce up to 25,000 barrels a day," he said.

He said the production was higher than the government`s target of 20,000 barrels a day.

He said however that BP Migas (downstream oil and gas regulatory agency) had set the target at only 16,000 barrels a day for 2010.

On Wednesday production at Cepu was recorded at 18,000 barrels a day and 13,000 of them were sent to Pertamina daily and the rest to PT Tri Wahana Universal.

If the 20,000 scenario was reached it would sell 14,000 of them to Pertamina and 6,000 to PT Tri Wahana Universal.

The production at Cepu came from five wells consisting of four production and one water injection wells.

The production facility at Banyuurip started operating in August 2009 and had conducted test production of 20,000 barrels in October 2009.

Maman said until now Cepu Block has produced 1.5 million barrels a day.

In February 2010, Exxon plans to drill a well in the Alas Tua Barat field, Kedung Keris and Alas Tua Timur.

He said the company would also start a gas injection facility in February 2010.

In 2010 Exxon will also help PT Tri Wahana Universal build a refinery and a reliable receiving facility and seek other buyers.

Regarding the company`s plan to produce 165,000 barrels a day Maman said the final version of the front end engineering design had been completed and bidding for the engineering, procurement and production was ready to be carried out.

He said the company was currently just conducting the first stage of the engineering, procurement and production auction.

"Normally it will take a year before the winning bidder is determined so that next year construction could be started," he said.

The second stage of the engineering, procurement and production auction to the fifth stage will be done after BP Migas gives an approval.

"If construction will take 33 months by the end of 2013 the project will be finished," he said.

THREE CHARGED OVER MALAYSIA CHURCH ARSON - REPORT

Jakarta Forum - Kuala Lumpur, Jan 29, Three people were charged in a Malaysian court on Friday for the firebomb attack that gutted a church amid a row on the use of the word "Allah" by Christians, state news agency Bernama reported.

The three, all ethnic Malay Muslims aged between 22 to 24 who work as motorcycle couriers, claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court to a charge of committing mischief by fire, Bernama reported.

The offence carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine upon conviction. Court officials and the lawyers of the accused were not immediately available for comment.

Police have arrested 19 people so far for in connection with a series of arson and vandalism attacks on 11 churches, a Catholic school, a Sikh temple, a mosque and two prayer rooms.

The heads of pigs -- an animal considered offensive to Muslims -- were also dumped in two other mosques in the capital on Thursday, near to a neighbourhood hit by an ethnic clash nine years ago.

Analysts have said the attacks, although not an immediate risk, are raising worries among some foreign investors at a time when Prime Minister Najib Razak has pledged to lure more foreign investment.

The row stems from a court ruling on Dec. 31 last year allowing a Catholic newspaper to use the word "Allah" in its Malay-language editions to describe the Christian God.

The use of the word is common among Malay-speaking Christians, who account for 9.1 percent of the 28 million population, mostly in the Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak.

The issue has unearthed combustible ethnic and religious political fault lines in the mainly Muslim Southeast Asian country.

The government is appealing against the court verdict, while the opposition maintains that the use of the word by Christians is permissible.

Malaysia`s mainly Chinese and Indian non-Muslim ethnic minorities, who form 40 percent of the country`s population, abandoned the ruling coalition in the 2008 general elections partly due to complaints over increasing religious marginalisation.

BULLET MAILED TO JAPAN PM

Jakarta Forum - Tokyo, Bullets and death threats arrived by mail on Thursday at the offices of Japan`s Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and the secretary-general of his centre-left party, police said.

The bullet sent to the premier`s office was detected by security staff using an X-ray device.

"They gave the unopened envelope to police, who confirmed later that it was indeed a bullet," a prime minister`s office spokesman said, quoting Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Yorihisa Matsuno.

The office of Ichiro Ozawa, the powerful secretary-general of Hatoyama`s Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ), received an envelope containing what was believed to be a rifle bullet, said a Tokyo police spokesman.

A note to Hatoyama read "Die", while a card addressed to the party chief said, "The target is Ozawa," officials said.

It was not known who was responsible or what the motivation was.

In similar threats since the Hatoyama government took power last September, bullets have previously been sent to Ozawa`s office and residence, the DPJ headquarters and major broadcaster TV Asahi.

Approval ratings for the Hatoyama government, which ended a half-century of conservative rule, have plummeted as both the premier and Ozawa have become embroiled in political funds scandals.

NORTH KOREA SAYS DETAINS AMERICAN FOR TRESPASSING

Jakarta Forum - Seoul, Jan 29 - North Korea said on Thursday it had detained an American who crossed into its territory from China on Jan. 25 and was interrogating him.

The North`s official KCNA news agency said the man was "trespassing" but gave no further details.

North Korea has been holding another U.S. citizen, activist Robert Park, who was captured in December when he crossed into the communist state saying he planned to raise awareness about its human rights abuses.

The United States, which does not have diplomatic relations with North Korea, said it had asked Sweden, which represents its interests in Pyongyang, to look into the report.

"It`s obviously something we take seriously," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley told reporters in Washington, saying the United States had no confirmation of the report but suggesting it was plausible.

"Right now we`re operating on the assumption that it`s entirely possible that we have a second American citizen detained in North Korea in addition to Robert Park," he said.

In August, former U.S. President Bill Clinton went to North Korea to win the release of two American journalists held by the state for about four months for suspected illegal entry. Clinton`s high-profile visit paved the way for direct U.S.-North Korean nuclear talks.

Analysts have said North Korea may try to use Park as a bargaining chip with the United States in high-stakes negotiations over the North`s nuclear ambitions.

THAILAND`S PM: NO REASON TO DISSOLVE HOUSE

Jakarta Forum - Bangkok, Jan 28, Thailand`s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday reaffirmed that there is no reason to dissolve the House of Representatives following a disagreement between the coalition-leading Democrat Party and other coalition partners regarding the earlier plan to amend the Constitution, as he expressed confidence that the government can stay in office longer than March.

The premier made his assertion as the adviser to the leader of coalition partner Chart Thai Pattana Party Somsak Prissanananthakul submitted an open letter expressing his dissatisfaction over the resolution of the Democrat Party not to endorse the charter amendment motion to be lodged by the coalition parties.

Mr Abhisit said he never promised the coalition partners that he would amend the constitution regarding the electoral system, and that he is awaiting Social Action Party leader Suwit Khunkitti`s action to set a meeting of all coalition partners to discuss the issue.

The prime minister brushed aside concerns that the Democrat resolution will affect the stability of the coalition government.

"The situation in the first two or three months is tough, but there is still no sign of House dissolution," Mr Abhisit stated. "Disappointment and disagreement is normal but there is no reason to dissolve the House."

Mr Abhisit asserted that the Democrat Party will not review its decision if the coalition partners insist on lodging a charter amendment motion on two points; revise the voting system from multi-seat constituencies to single-seat, and the constitutional requirement that all international agreements must receive parliamentary approval.

The prime minister said he was informed that some organised violence may occur in the next few months as the court ruling on the assets seizure case involving former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on February 26 draws near, but said he was confident that his coalition government can last longer than March.

Meanwhile, the leader of coalition-partner Chart Thai Pattana Party Chumphon Silpa-archa reaffirmed that coalition partners will lodge a charter amendment motion to Parliament next week.

Mr Chumphon said that his party has forwarded the charter amendment draft to other coalition partners for consideration. If no revision is made, the motion will be submitted to House Speaker Chai Chidchob next week.

RI-US INTERFAITH LEADERS VISIT ISTIQLAL MOSQUE

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan 27 - Interfaith leaders from Indonesia and the United States visited Jakarta`s Istiqlal Grand Mosque on Wednesday as part of their three-day (Jan 25-27) dialogue hosted by Indonesia`s foreign ministry.

The visit to the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia was intended to give the parrticipants a clearer picture of Islam in Indonesia.

"I am amazed by the structure of the mosque and religious activity here. People always come here to conduct prayers even during working hours," Jean Duff, executive director of the Center for Interfaith Action on Global Poverty (CIFA), said in an interview.

Duff admitted she knew little about Indonesia. In fact, she added, most people in the US tended to associate Islam in Indonesia with negative stereotypes such as terrorism and brutality.

"Now I can tell that these assumptions are all wrong. Indonesia is a modern and democratic country with Islam as the religion of the majority," Duff said.

William Vandley, secretary general of the World Conference on Religion and Peace (WCRP), said the majority of the people in Indonesia and the US tended to have negative perceptions about each other.

He said the media`s tendency to only cover conflicts or tensions between Indonesia and US had their share in forming the negative opinions.

"This first ever interfaith dialogue is expected to reduce such negative stereotypes between the peoples of the two countries," Vandley said.

Sharing the Vandely`s view, Andri Hadi, director general of public information and services at Indonesia`s foreign ministry, said it was hoped the interfaith dialogue could erase all misunderstandings betwwen the peoples of both countries.

Italy: FIAT PLANT CLOSURES PROVOKE ANGER

Jakarta Forum - Turin, 27 Jan. - A plan by the car giant Fiat to close six Italian factories for two weeks in February has drawn criticism from the government and labour unions.

Fiat announced the move as Italy emerges from its worst economic slump in 60 years.

Fiat said late Tuesday it would close six car plants, including its main plant in the northern city of Turin, from 22 February until 7 March and 30,000 workers will be laid off.

Italian economic development minister Claudio Scajola criticised the company`s decision.

"The swiftness of the company`s decision announced from today, to take place at the end of the month, layoffs for everyone at Fiat plants seems to me an inappropriate decision," he told Sky TV news.

The Fiat announcement came just two days after Italy`s largest car maker announced an 800 million euro loss in 2009 in part because of the current recession.

Turin-based Fiat`s performance would have been worse if it not for government incentives which encouraged consumers to buy new vehicles.

Fiat told Adnkronos International (AKI) that the decision to shut down the Italian assembly lines was made after January and February orders fell below 2009 levels and government incentive programmes came to end.

"What`s the option, keep building cars that sit in a compound?," the spokesman told AKI. "This is a European industrywide problem. If we don`t have enough orders in the pipeline we`re not going to build the cars."

Labour minister Maurizio Sacconi also criticised the sudden decision which was made as the government prepares to hold talks with Fiat and trade unions about a controversial plan to shut the Termini Imerese plant is Sicily in 2011.

Trade unions have threatened to strike over the issue in February.

"It`s an insensitive decision that interrupts talks with labour. We hope this can be remedied soon," labour minister Maurizio Sacconi told Italian state television Rai 1 on Tuesday.

Italy emerged from recession in the third quarter last year but economists have cautioned that the country will experience a slow recovery this year.

At least one in ten Italians is out of work including temporarily laid off workers collecting unemployment benefits.

Raffaele Bonanni, head of one of Italy`s largest union bodies, CSIL, said the company is using its power to slash production as a bargaining chip in its talks with workers.

"Some people would call it blackmail," said Bonanni, whose organisation represents around 4.5 million workers across Italy.

Fiat chief executive officer Sergio Marchionne told reporters in January that the unions had to accept the fact that the crisis in the car industry had forced Fiat to make tough decisions to stay in business.

Fiat employs a total of 80,000 people in Italy. (u.b005)

INDOSAT PLANS TO CHANGE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan 27 - PT Indosat Tbk. signalled it would change its board of directors because shareholders are not happy with the performance of its management so far, state enterprise minister Mustafa Abubakar said.

"Shareholders would meet tonight to discuss the issue among others," he said here on Wednesday.

He said one of the agenda of the shareholder meeting on Thursday would be changing the board members.

He said the meeting would be attended by the shareholders including Qatar Telecom (Qtel) and the Indonesian government, the holder of the company`s Series A shares.

"It cannot as yet be ascertained. It will all depend upon the result of the meeting which is coordinated by one of the commissioners, Rachmat Gobel," Mustafa said.

He admitted as the shareholder representing the Indonesian government in the company he was not too happy with the performance of the current management led by Harry Sasongko.

"We hope Indosat would remain agressive and expansive. Its current performance is not satisfying," he said.

According to data, Indosat under Qtel had never been able to win in competitions.

Since the end of 2009 its position in terms of the number of customers or infrastructure has been overtaken by PT XL Axiata Tbk.

In 2009 Indosat only had 17,618 towers (BTS) while XL`s towers already totalled 18,790.

At the same time XL customers already reached 31.4 millions above Indosat`s which totalled around 30 millions.

According to earlier rumours the vice president director of state-owned electricity company PT PLN, Rudiantara, would be made Indosat`s executive board member.

Rudiantara who once worked in XL and also used to be the vice president director of PT Semen Gresik was rumoured to be nominated by the Indonesian government to replace Harry Sasongko.

Mustafa seemed to be impressed by Rudiantara who was considered professional. "That is why I would not give directives. We will refer the decision to the shareholders," he said.

SOME 20 ATM SCAM SUSPECTS NOW BEHIND BARS

Jakarta Forum - Jakarta, Jan 27 - A special detective team set up by the National Police Headquarters has rounded up 20 people suspected of involvement in the recent automatic teller machine (ATM) break-ins in the country.

"The number of suspects already arrested reached 20 today and we are still hunting 10 others," the head of the National Police Headquarters` Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim), Commissioner General Ito Sumardi said here on Wednesday.

Ito said that ATM hacking cases had continued to increase because the suspects had committed the crimes since 2006 based on information obtained by investigators.

Previously, police had identified 13 suspects of whom 10 were already arrested and the remaining three still being pursued. Bank customers` losses by the ATM scams were estimated to total Rp6 billion.

The suspects arrested were known by their initials as F, SA, MS, MI, Ri, Su, Aj, Ir and the suspects on the police`s wanted list as Yu, Sup, Pa and J.

Up to now, police had not yet found any indication that the ATM scams at different places in the country were inter-linked. But police were still following up clues of a possible link between the cases in Bali and those in Jakarta.

"The question is that the scams in Bali were carried out under guidance from Jakarta," " Ito said.

MALAYSIA ARRESTS 10 FOR TERRORISM

Jakarta Forum - KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (ANTARA/Reuters) - Malaysia has detained ten people, nine of them foreigners, suspected of links with international militant groups, the country`s home minister said on Wednesday.

The men were detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) which allows police to hold suspects for an indefinite period without trial.

"We have worked with foreign intelligence organisations in this operation. All ten are involved in international terrorism," Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters. He did not give more details of the operation.

Earlier, an advocacy group fighting for the abolition of the colonial-era ISA, said that 50 people had been initially detained under the law, but later 38 were released.

Malaysia has in the past deployed the ISA against suspected members of the Al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah group whose prominent leaders include a number of Malaysians.

The Southeast Asian country has been spared from a militant attack, but an insurgency in southern Thailand on its border could affect its security if it starts to draw sympathy from Malaysians for the ethnic Malay fighters.[ID:nKLR442319]

The multi-ethnic country, in recent weeks, has also faced religious tensions ignited by the use of the word "Allah" by Christians to denote their god in Malay language publications. Churches, a Catholic school, a Sikh temple and mosques have been hit by arson or vandalism.
