IT looked likely to be MotoGP business as usual this morning after Casey Stoner smashed yet another lap record to grab his 10th pole of the season in Motegi.
The Australian was hoping to pull off his well-honed trick of clearing off into the sunset when the re-scheduled MotoGP of Japan got under way at about 7am UK time today.
The Repsol Honda star set a fastest lap of 1.45:267mins, shattering reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo's three-year record and also earning himself the title of most successful qualifier in the MotoGP four-stroke era.
"Everything has gone very well so far this weekend, we've been fastest in all but one session so it's been fantastic," he said.
"We'll have to watch the weather as this will affect the set-up, there's also a chance of rain so it could get complicated.
"Jorge has been riding fantastic, as has Dovi (Dovizioso) and Dani (Pedrosa) but there is no doubt that the Honda suits this track, I've been looking forward to riding it here for a while now and I'm not disappointed."
Lorenzo's best time was two-tenths down on Stoner, and he was due to start from second on the grid on his factory Yamaha, with the 2010 polesitter Andrea Dovizioso third and his Repsol team-mate Dani Pedrosa heading the second row in fourth.
Valentino Rossi was hoping to make up some lost ground from the head of third row on his Ducati, while Briton Cal Crutchlow joined the sick list and struggled his way through qualifying, ending the session 12th on the Monster
Tech 3 Yamaha.
Crutchlow and Hector Barbera both reported suffering with 'flu-like symptoms yesterday, while Lorenzo's team-mate Ben Spies bounced back from a bad bout of food poisoning to start from fifth.
